Nomahegan is an authorized provider of the American Red Cross (ARC) Learn To Swim program.
Preschool Aquatics Level 1 (Basic Beginner)
Participants must be fully potty trained and able to enter the water without a swim diaper. Participants must be at least 3 years in age. Designed to orient preschoolers to the aquatic environment and to help them gain basic aquatic skills. Students will work on kicking, submerging in the water, retrieving submerged objects, floating on back and stomach and introduction to basic water safety skills.
Preschool Aquatics Level 2 (Beginner 1)
Participants must be fully potty trained and able to enter the water without a swim diaper. Participants must be comfortable fully submerging in the water. This class builds on the basic aquatic skills and water safety skills and concepts learned in Level 1. Participants begin to perform skills at a slightly more advanced level and begin gaining rudimentary propulsive skills on both the front and the back. Level 2 will begin to develop the fundamentals of swimming freestyle and backstroke using both arm and leg action as well as treading water.
Stroke Development (Beginner 2)
Participants must be at least 5 years of age
For children who can swim independently, but need to work on stoke development. Students in this class will work on proper freestyle and backstroke technique, as well as be introduced to breaststroke and butterfly kick. Students will also be introduced to independent swimming in deep water, as well as proper technique for treading water. An objective of this course is to provide students with the skills necessary to pass the deep-water test.
Stroke Improvement (Advanced Beginner)
Participants must have passed the deep-water test. Participants must have knowledge of proper freestyle and backstroke techniques. For children who can swim freestyle with good technique and have a basic understanding of backstroke. Stroke improvement will begin building endurance for swimming longer distances and will work towards perfecting kicking techniques in all four strokes.
Stroke Refinement (Intermediate)
Participants must have passed the deep-water test. Participants must be able to comfortably swim at least 1 length in the lap pool without stopping while demonstrating proper freestyle technique. For children who can swim freestyle and backstroke demonstrating proper technique. Stroke refinement will work on developing breaststroke and butterfly, as well as flip turns and diving for swimming. In addition, the course will continue to build endurance to prepare participants for longer swims.
Swimming & Skill Proficiency (Swimmer)
Participants must have passed the deep-water test. Participants must be able to comfortably swim at least 2 lengths in the lap pool without stopping while demonstrating proper freestyle and backstroke technique. For children who have the ability to swim all four strokes and have the strength to do multiple laps. Swimmers will work on perfecting technique in all four strokes as well as perfecting their dives and turns. Swimmers will also learn more advanced racing skills including open turns, bucket turns, breaststroke pullouts, and more.

Sign-ups are weekly and will open every Friday at 8am
Classes will run for 5 individual weeks
All classes are 30 minutes and run Monday through Friday
Preschool 1: 10:15am and 10:45am
Preschool 2: 10:15am and 10:45am
Stroke Development: 11:45am and 12:15pm
Stroke Improvement: 12:15pm and 12:45pm
Stroke Refinement: 10:45am and 11:15am
Swim/Skill Proficiency: 10:15am and 11:15am
*Note: The course schedule is subject to change week by week based on demand for each class. Each Wednesday instructors will discuss the potential demand for the coming week and adjust the quantity of each course accordingly.
*Parents are advised to read the prerequisites and place their children into the class that most closely matches their child’s swimming ability. Any necessary adjustments will be made by instructors as necessary on Monday. Every Thursday morning, instructors will then give their recommendation for placement the following week.
*Please note that in order to ensure all participants receive the highest quality instruction possible instructors will have final say on all placements.
